LADY OLGA MAITLAND TO HOST A ROUND TABLE
‘WHICH WAY RUSSIA?’
Post the US Presidential Elections, critical questions to be asked: How will President Putin react?
What impact will President Trump have on the outcome of the war with Ukraine?
Professor Jonathan Haslam, distinguished academic on the former Soviet Union. Professor of International Relations at Cambridge University. Fellow of Corpus Christi, former professor at Harvard, Yale and Stanford.
Moderator: Dr Nigel Gould-Davies, former UK ambassador to Belarus, Senior Fellow, IISS on Russia
Recently Professor Haslam published HUBRIS, (excessive over confidence) which attempts to answer the question, why Putin attacked Ukraine in 2022. The search for answers took an unexpected turn. As he said, ‘the research led me to the United States after the dissolution of the USSR, the US determination to remain in Europe at whatever cost, and the concomitant decision taken secretly in 1994 to expand NATO, taking in Ukraine.
‘The subsequent and catastrophic decision to solve Russia’s geopolitical dilemma by means of a war has led to disastrous consequences on both sides. It solved nothing. That is now recognised on all sides. The settlement of differences will be the major challenge facing the incoming administration.’
Dinner: 21 Cloudesley Street, London, N1 0HX 7 for 7.30 pm. black tie.
Ticket: £85 pp
